Greetings from sweet home Alabama! It’s been a while but I must say, a weekend in the sun already has me feeling ready to spread some sunshine around. So here it is – an ode to southern living.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I love the south! This is obviously first and foremost because of the plethora of sun to go around, shining day in and day out, making everything beautiful and green and blooming. The spring humidity just hangs in the air like a welcome hug, and makes you want to take a walk and listen to those birds that just chirp and chirp all day long.
Not only does the sun shine brighter and longer, but so do the people. Everywhere I go, someone is eager to strike up a conversation, and there’s nothing I love more than friendly strangers. They like your outfit, they want to hear about your day, they crack jokes in passing. Keep it coming, and bless your heart.
That brings me to my last point – there’s no rush. People are fine to stop and have a ten minute conversation, or literally to stop and smell the roses. No racing cars or honking horns to be found here. As someone who tends to be go-go-go, it’s a refreshing change of pace.
So what’s the takeaway here, you might ask, considering us poor New England folks don’t have the built-in luxury of southern sun OR hospitality? While we sadly can’t change the weather, I think there is plenty we can do to channel some of the sunshine in other ways. Let’s smile at strangers, give compliments, let someone ahead of us in line. We can get outside when we have the chance, even when it’s cold, and remember to slow down for a few minutes every day. And when all else fails, let’s head to the nearest Chick-Fil-A and hope the winter ends soon. ☼
