The first day of Summer has officially arrived! As you can imagine, nothing makes me happier than the season of sunshine. But I have to say, in the three short months that make up a New England summer, there’s a LOT of pressure to pack in a ton of activities. We’re talking happy hours, beach trips, travel adventures, new restaurants to try, and more. And of course, this is on top of the constant pressure to still stay on top of work, be active, get outside whenever possible, eat healthy, and get enough sleep. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and they’re all great things, but it can also be a tad overwhelming.
To be honest, summer started off pretty rough for me this year, navigating a lot of change on top of an extremely hectic work and travel schedule that left me wildly sleep-deprived and completely unable to enjoy much of anything at all. Thankfully, I knew there was an end in sight, having taken a full week off of work mid-June for a trip with friends – and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
So now, I’m currently reporting live from Nantucket, where I’m spending the week work- and worry-free with ten of my closest friends. I definitely feel lucky to be able to do so, and I already feel so much better. But even if you’re just at home, I can’t stress enough how important it is to take a step back sometimes when things get overwhelming. It’s something I have a hard time with, because who doesn’t want to succeed at everything all the time? But if I had kept going the way things had been for much longer, I was guaranteed to have a full on mental breakdown, and no one wants that. We can’t do it all all the time, and that’s okay.
So if you’re reading this, consider it the sign you’ve been waiting for to take some PTO. Set aside a day (or five) to kick back and relax, whatever that may look like for you. Be present, stay off your phone (I love how service on the island is extremely limited), enjoy slow mornings, read a book, get some sun, spend time with people who make you happy, breathe. I promise you won’t regret it. ☼
