We’re on month eight of working (or going to school, or applying to jobs, or anything else that might be occupying your time) from home. While there are definitely some advantages spending so much time at home – like maybe enjoying more time with family, or avoiding that morning commute in 10 degree weather – it can also have its downsides. I know I personally struggle to stay totally focused outside of the office, and something that I’ve found plays a huge factor in this is my environment.
To help refocus, I recently revamped my workspace, and am here to report that it has also revamped my productivity. Here’s a few tips on setting up an enjoyable space that’ll ensure you get sh*t done!
1. Designate a space specifically for working. I find that if I’m working somewhere new every day (like.. maybe the couch while watching TV), it’s much harder for me to get in the zone. The first step to having a solid workspace is deciding exactly where you want to work, and sticking to that spot every day. I thought I’d toss in this photo of exactly what NOT to do for good measure. Consistency is key, people!
2. Let there be light. When determining where to set up shop, I highly recommend prioritizing a spot with a solid amount of sunlight. You’re going to be spending a lot of time here, so make it bright and airy – no one wants to feel like they’re stuck in a dungeon all day.
3. Stand up! There’s nothing worse than sitting for 8+ hours a day – or having your Apple Watch constantly yelling at you for not reaching your Stand goal. For this reason, I chose to invest in a desk that can be converted to standing height, but even if you can relocate to a higher surface to occasionally get up from your chair, I highly recommend doing so!
4. Declutter. This is a big one – I personally find it IMPOSSIBLE to focus in a space that feels crowded and cluttered. This goes for not only just your actual workspace, but the room you’re spending time in as well. Keep it simple, and keep it clean!
5. Incorporate something that makes you happy. Maybe it’s your new plant or a picture that makes you smile. Even just a small trinket can go a long way in making your space feeling more homey!
Whether you choose to use all of these tips or even just one, I’m sure it’ll help you feel more focused every day. Let’s be intentional where we’re spending our time – and how – and it’s sure to pay off. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish. ☼
