Spending months on end in quarantine may not be ideal, but one undeniably positive aspect of staying at home is that it’s helping the earth recover from decades and decades of damage. One of my resolutions this year was to be more environmentally conscious, and since staying home is already reducing our environmental impact, why not take it a step further? Here are my top 10 tips to easily help make our earth a better place.
1. Stick to a reusable water bottle. My Hydro Flask is my personal favorite accessory, not only because it keeps me hydrated whether I’m on the go or glued to the couch, but also because it prevents me from going through 10+ plastic water bottles a day. Pick a bottle, stay hydrated, save the planet. It’s that simple.
2. Recycle. Duh. It seems simple enough, but making the effort to check that you’re truly recycling everything that can be makes a big difference.
3. Lights out! Being more conscious of the energy we use in our own homes is harder than you might think. I’ve found that whenever I go to a different part of the house, even if I think that I’ll “be right back,” I probably won’t and I should really just shut those lights off.
4. Ditch the K cups. I know, I know. But why not brew some nice old fashioned coffee grounds, or at least get a reusable K-cup to cut down on all that plastic? It’s cheaper AND better for the planet.
5. Take shorter showers. Who are you trying to impress these days, anyway?
6. Shop locally. Supporting your local businesses isn’t just good for the economy – it’s good for the planet, too.
7. Bike/walk/run when you can. Get active while getting where you need to go – what could be better!
8. BYO. Whether it’s bringing your own bag to the grocery store or bringing your own cup or straw to a coffee shop, reusable items make a big difference! Even though many places aren’t currently allowing this, it’s a great habit to keep in mind for the future.
9. Shop eco-conscious brands. There are so many companies that make an effort to do good, and I’m working on compiling a list of brands that do just that – stay tuned 🙂
10. Try eating plant based! Last but not least, this is my personal favorite tip. I recently made the switch to being fully vegetarian and am loving it, but even if you decide to do a meatless Monday, choose more chicken over beef, or cut down on dairy every once in a while, a little goes a long way towards reducing our environmental impact – not to mention the impact on the animals!
Even if you only choose to incorporate a few of these tips – or, even better, if you already are – it’s a great start to make a positive change with little impact on our day to day lives. We only have one planet – let’s keep this good momentum going. ☼
