Merry Christmas and happy holidays, friends! It’s hard to believe that we’re already wrapping up another holiday season. I write a holiday post every year, and the sentiment remains practically the same each time – despite being in the depths of Winter, this truly is the most wonderful time of the year. And how can it not be, what with all of the celebrating and gift-giving and spending time with loved ones.
While that remains true, there was something else that stood out to me this year more than others. What I really love about Christmas is simple: joy. It’s a constant push to make every moment of life a little happier. Our everyday streets sparkle with lights, homes are decked out with the coziest decor, there’s an endless menu of heart-warming movies and a constant supply of the sweetest of treats, opportunities to help others arise at every corner, the calendar is packed with gatherings with coworkers and friends and families, and people are quite literally just always handing you gifts. You can’t help but feel joyful when you’re surrounded by so many endorphin boosters – and life truly just feels a little better set to the tune of some jolly Christmas songs. These little additions to my day were a constant reminder to take the time to make sure I was enjoying the moments and making the most of this short season. It’s enough to transform the mundane into the magical, and I certainly needed it this year.
So now that Christmas has come and gone and we face the transition into January, I think we should bring some of that mindset into the new year. The festive overload may soon be coming to an end, but how else can we inject little bits of joy into our everyday lives? Should we be making more of an effort to watch feel-good films, instead of reality TV? Making sure to spend as much time as possible with our favorite people? Cooking and baking food that’s good for the soul – even if it’s not the healthiest? Giving someone a gift or volunteering just because? Listening to songs that, while potentially not set to the tune of Jingle Bells, make you feel extra happy? A commute to work can certainly be livened up with the right playlist, after all. No matter what it is, I’d like to find ways to make every day a bit more joyful.
So here’s hoping that everyone had a wonderful December and that we can bring a little Christmas magic into the new year, no matter what that looks like. Happy holidays and happy new year, friends. ☼
