Good morning friends! Now hear me out — I know better than anyone that some days, there’s nothing better than snoozing that alarm, sleeping in until the last possible minute, rolling out of bed and tossing on some sweatpants to start your day. Anyone who knows me knows this is what I view as a morning routine half the time. But I think we can all agree that when you start your day off right, anything is possible.
So let’s talk about it – the ideal morning routine. The type that has you feeling like you’re ready to conquer the world, all before 9am. Here’s a few ingredients of what I consider the recipe to the happiest mornings, guaranteed to make for a truly great day:
An early start – but not too early. As a natural night owl, I’m constantly fighting the urge to sleep in. Waking up before 8am can definitely be a struggle, but so worth it to fit in so many activities before I’m actually on the clock. To all those who naturally wake up with the sun, I envy you.
The right kind of wake up. So we’ve already decided we’re waking up a little earlier than usual — but I’ve got a major tip to make that a lot more enjoyable. I recently purchased a Hatch alarm clock, which now wakes me up with soothing wind chime noises as their beautifully crafted artificial sunlight brightens my entire room. Let me tell you, it is night and day (literally) for helping me get out of bed compared to my typical blaring alarm. And even if you don’t want to pull the trigger on this one just yet, we can all recreate this at home by choosing a nice, relaxing alarm sound to wake up to — and turning on our lights as soon as it goes off.
A freshly made bed. This is my newest habit, and arguably the one I’m most proud of! It’s an easy task you can cross off the list as soon as you wake up, guaranteed to leave you feeling accomplished. Life is just so much better when you have a made bed, especially when you’re climbing back into bed at night. I also recently invested in a new and improved sheet set, and I’m now practically fighting the urge to hop back into bed at all times.
A workout. It could be a 5-mile run, a leisurely stroll outside, or my personal favorite, twenty minutes of yoga (MWH, anyone?). I’m a big believer that getting that heart rate up is the best way to kick-start the day, especially when it provides an excuse to get some fresh air.
A shower. And maybe after freshening up we even put some real clothes on. I know, I know, let’s not get too carried away – but look good, smell good, feel good… am I right?
A coffee run. Shocking, I know. But what’s better than heading out into the world on a sunny morning and picking up a delicious cup of joe? Honestly, this is my favorite part of the day solely because it’s a chance for me to interact with my friendly neighborhood baristas – you guys are the real MVPs.
An activity just for you. We’re clean, we’re dressed, we’re caffeinated… what’s next? If I have extra time before my day really starts, I love to dedicate some time to something just for me. Lately, that’s been setting aside a few minutes to write or read – but whatever it is for you, go for it! Meditate, journal, call a friend, whatever helps start your day with a smile.
A great playlist. I can’t forget to mention that any and all of these activities are best enjoyed with a side of bumpin’ beats. When in doubt, Spotify’s Wake up Happy playlist is guaranteed to turn your morning up a notch.
A great breakfast. Having the time to dedicate to cheffing up a really great meal to fuel your day is an undeniable treat. An omelet, avocado toast, pancakes, a green smoothie… the possibilities are endless. I’ll take them all, please.
An early start to the workday. All this and not scrambling to make it in time for your first meeting (or class, or whatever else you might have on the schedule) of the day? Actually having time to take a deep breath and get organized? Truly magical.
I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling better already. While I realize these might not all be realistic in the same morning, just sprinkling a few of these in can only improve the quality of your day. Whatever your ideal morning routine might look like, let’s get after it tomorrow together. After all, it’s a great day to have a great day! ☼
